Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans (nose, throat, and lungs). The flu is different from a cold. Influenza usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms: fever, headache, tiredness (can be extreme), dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches. These symptoms are usually referred to as "flu-like" symptoms.

DoD Influenza Surveillance Summary 04 Dec 12

Each week the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center publishes a summary of influenza activity in the COCOMS. The summary tracks influenza like illness, flu activity through the DoD laboratory surveillance network and influenza vaccination coverage. Reports are by COCOM and service members or beneficiary populations.

FDA approves first seasonal influenza vaccine culture 04 Dec 12

On November 20th the FDA announced approval of Flucelvax, the first seasonal influenza vaccine licensed in the United States produced using cultured animal cells, instead of fertilized chicken eggs. Flucelvax is approved to prevent seasonal influenza in people ages 18 years and older. The manufacturing process is similar to the egg-based production method, but a significant difference is that the virus strains included in the vaccine are grown in animal cells of mammalian origin instead of in eggs. Cell culture technology has already been in use for several decades to produce other U.S. licensed vaccines.

What side effects can I expect when I receive FluMist®?
The viruses in the intranasal vaccine are weakened and do not cause severe symptoms associated with influenza. Common side effects may include runny nose, headache, fever, cough, and sore throat. Other possible side effects are chills, cough, decreased activity, decreased appetite, headache, irritability, muscle aches, and tiredness/weakness. For more information, see http://www.flumist.com.
